We began with an egg case that you can see in this picture that is about the size of a large marshmallow. A few weeks later, 75 - 200 praying mantises hatched out (no, we didn't count them....that's just what the instructions said!) Since we have to feed them aphids (of which we have none), we will be releasing them all tomorrow to forage for their food. Our next project began with 5 tiny caterpillars....they were maybe 1 centimeter long but grew very quickly to jumbo size!

Soon they began forming into chrysalids hanging from the top of the container.

We then transferred them to a butterfly cage and awaited the big event.

We now have 5 beautiful Painted Lady butterflies! We will feed them for awhile and enjoy their beauty before releasing them outside.
